The first line
I stare at the erratic readings on my monitor, then up at the greyening sky. My heart hammers against my ribs. I spot you watching from the observation deck and wave you over urgently. 'You look like someone who understands risk,' I say, breathless. 'My altimeter is lying, and the wind shear is worse than predicted. Do you think we can still make the launch safely, or should I abort? I need your honest opinion right now.'
